All About the History of Oktoberfest

The history of Oktoberfest is a long one, and probably not what you would expect! Oktoberfest started in Munich, Germany, in 1810, and has since become a popular fall festival across the U.S. It first started as something of a 5-day wedding celebration for the Bavarian Crown prince and princess.

The then anniversary celebration has evolved greatly over the years. What was once a field celebration featuring a horse race has turned into a celebration of German foods, great beer from local vendors, and live music. It’s certainly a great legacy left behind by the royal family of Bavaria!

Where to Catch Oktoberfest on Cape Cod

This fall festival has been adopted all of the U.S., and Oktoberfest in Massachusetts is no exception. From early September to late October, the Oktoberfest celebrations makes its way through the Cape. Two of our favorite places to catch the festival is to attend Oktoberfest in Chatham and Hyannis. You can expect local, Cape Cod beer, German-style music and food, and a great time from both!

Oktoberfest in Chatham takes place at Kate Gould Park from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Oct. 19, 2019, for an afternoon filled with family-friendly fun! There’s beer and live music for the adults as well as arts, crafts, and games for the little ones!
