Getting to Know the Kennedy Compound

The Kennedy Compound originated in 1928 when Joseph P. Kennedy purchased a large waterfront home as a summer retreat for his family. Over the following decades, the compound expanded to include three main houses, forming a family enclave. These homes, classic examples of Cape Cod architecture, feature shingle-style exteriors, large porches, and expansive lawns, blending seamlessly with the coastal environment.

The property gained national prominence during John F. Kennedy’s presidency, serving as the Summer White House. It was a venue for official business, hosting dignitaries, and family gatherings. Iconic moments — such as strategy meetings during the Cuban Missile Crisis — and family activities — like sailing and touch football — were captured here.

Today, the Kennedy Compound remains privately owned and used by the Kennedy family, preserving its historical and sentimental value. It stands as a testament to the Kennedy family’s enduring legacy and significant contributions to American history.

    The Location & View

The Kennedy Compound on Cape Cod is spread across six acres along Nantucket Harbor. Although visitors aren’t allowed on the grounds or inside, we know where to get the best views! Here are our recommendations:

    • One of the best ways to see the residence is from the ferry heading to and from Martha’s Vineyard. Plus, it makes an excellent day trip during your stay!
    • You will be unable to see the compound from the road, but you might catch a glimpse as you walk along the beach. The oceanfront homes capture the Kennedy lifestyle and show how the former president and his family lived on Cape Cod.
