    Who is Edward Gorey?

Edward Gorey’s love of art started at the age of 2 and grew from there. He was an exceptional student and artist throughout high school, then he enrolled in the army. Afterwards, he went to Harvard and began writing and directing. Following graduation, he began working as a freelance artist; it is estimated that he illustrated over 100 books during this time. He also started creating and illustrating his own works. As he gained fame, he was invited to exhibit art in galleries, publish his works in foreign languages, and create anthologies that are now considered classics. His strange and dark works have captivated audiences for years, one of his most famous being The Gashlycrumb Tinies.

    Visiting the Edward Gorey House

The legacy of Edward Gorey will live on forever through his works, but his house is also preserved in honor of him. The artist purchased the 200-year-old sea captain’s home in 1979 and continued to fill its walls with original artwork until his death in 2000.

Each year, The Edward Gorey House chooses an exhibit from the author’s vast collection of twisted literature. Each exhibit contains a small selection of Edward Gorey’s surrealist, unconventional interpretations. Past exhibits include Artifacts from the Archives: Rare, Never-Seen, Hardly-Ever Seen & Rediscovered Works by Edward Gorey and a book cover art collection titled From Aesop to Updike. You never know what to expect, but you always know it will be interesting!
