Early History of the Cape Cod Melody Tent

Raymond Moore was the founder of summer theatre on Cape Cod and was looking for an additional site to stage his shows. In 1932, his search led him up the coast to the South Shore community of Cohasset. He chose to historic town hall to present performances by a variety of stars, including Humphrey Bogart. At this point, management was passed to Alexander Dean, who then formed the South Shore Players. This organization featured the foremost writers and actors of the time. When their space became too small to accommodate crowds, the dream of establishing a performing arts center became a reality. It was right around this time that the first tent theatres began operating on the East Coast. In 1950, the Cape Cod Melody Tent became the third of its kind to open in the United States.

Modern Times at the Cape Cod Melody Tent

Though the Cape Cod Melody Tent originally features old-fashioned wooden risers, it has been converted to permanent stadium seats. The traditional canvas tent was also replaced by a state-of-the-art vinyl one with a cupola. The resident theatre touring performers are also now gone. World-class caliber acts have taken their place. Some major names include Tony Bennett, Carole King, Kenny Rogers, Crosby Stills and Nash, Hall and Oates, The Doobie Brothers, the Beach Boys, and Aretha Franklin.
