    About The Brewster Fish House

Whether you want lunch or dinner, The Brewster Fish House is a contemporary bistro-style restaurant located in a charming cottage. It’s one of the most popular restaurants in Brewster, drawing crowds for its sophisticated spin on classic New England seafood dishes.

Situated right off scenic Route 6A — also known as Brewster’s historic Main Street — is usually open Wednesday through Sunday, offering an intimate and enchanting al fresco dining experience. And, it has an eclectic wine list, unique cocktails, and select craft beer to drink alongside your lunch or dinner.

The Brewster Fish House has been rated on Zagat’s list of top restaurants “for its outstanding contemporary menu.”

History of The Brewster Fish House

In 1982, David and Vernon Smith purchased The Brewster Fish House. At the time, the cottage was a fish market that was previously a gladiola farmstand and part of a commercial garage.

The brothers didn’t have any previous experience running a restaurant but went ahead with transforming the market into a 52-seat, upscale eatery with fresh local fish dishes.

After David Smith passed away in 2009, Vernon and his wife Melissa took over the restaurant. Until spring 2020, the couple continued to make gradual changes to maintain The Brewster Fish House’s reputation.

With changes in the economy, the owners started offering takeout and outdoor dining. They even switched from serving traditional, fine-dining courses to offering a more casual dining experience at lower prices. Plus, part of the parking lot has been turned into al fresco seating.

    The Brewster Fish House Menu

From appetizers to dessert, The Brewster Fish House serves a menu of mouthwatering plates alongside beer, wine, and cocktails. Everything on the menu is made with the freshest ingredients possible, so the menu changes according to what’s available each season.

Although the dishes on the menu change depending on the season, here are some examples of the items that you could find.

    Appetizers

You don’t want to skip getting an appetizer, especially since this part of the menu often features some of The Brewster Fish House’s specialties — fish house chowder, lobster bisque, and bouillabaisse. You may also order housemade lobster rangoon, calamari, caviar, oysters, mussels, and sea trout.

    Lunch & Dinner

As the name suggests, fish is a major part of the menu at The Brewster Fish House. The restaurant sources all of its fish (and produce) from local fishermen and farms on Cape Cod when possible. When the owners have to source ingredients elsewhere, they choose highly ethical and reputable suppliers.

Salmon and fish and chips are two entrees that you will almost always see on the menu for lunch and dinner. Other options include chicken, brisket, shrimp or clam linguini, and halibut.

New to the menu since 2020 are sandwiches, including a burger. The Vietnamese banh mi sandwich and cold lobster roll are two popular options that are sometimes available. Cod and crab sandwiches might be options as well.

    Wine, Cocktails, & Beer

If you want to pair libations with your meal, you have several fantastic options. The wine list features a nice selection of red and white wines that you can order by the glass, or you can order a half bottle. Although there are fewer draft, bottled, and canned beer options, there’s still something for everyone.

The signature house cocktails are where The Brewster Fish House really shines, though. There are some interestingly named options — such as Aviation, Paper Plane, and Moroccan Sidecar.

Also, you’ll see some exciting twists on cocktail classics — such as a Grapefruit Cosmo, Cherry Margarita, and Thai Lychee Martini. Another classic with a twist is the Snowy Owl Martini, which showcases the amazing espresso served at Snowy Owl Roasters.

    Dessert

You can top off your dining experience at The Brewster Fish House with a decadent dessert too. Aside from ice cream and sorbet, the selection changes frequently but is always delicious and satisfying for any sweet tooth. Examples include creme brulee and honey cheesecake.

    Food Allergies & Sensitivities

If you have food allergies or sensitivities, you don’t have to worry about dining at The Brewster Fish House. The owners and chef take food allergies seriously and do their best to accommodate vegetarian and celiac diets.

Along with offering some vegetarian items, the menu has several gluten-free appetizers, entrees, and desserts — oysters, salmon, brisket, halibut, and creme brulee are a few options. You can even order a hard seltzer without worrying about gluten.

Best Time for a Brewster Fish House Dinner

The Brewster Fish House can get pretty busy in the evenings when it’s time for dinner. However, the restaurant doesn’t take reservations and only seats guests on a first-come, first-served basis. For that reason, we suggest that you arrive shortly before the staff starts seating for dinnertime.

If you don’t want to eat dinner that early, it’s recommended that you arrive 30 to 45 minutes before you want to be seated. Fortunately, you can wait on the patio while enjoying some libations. On the other hand, you could call ahead to have the host add you to the waiting list when you’re on your way.

When it comes to parking, there’s ample room in front and behind the restaurant. To the left of the front door is some handicap-accessible parking.

Events at The Brewster Fish House
