Many of us long for the days of ocean breezes and fresh seafood. You might be thinking about planning a trip to Cape Cod, but where should you stay? With so many great towns on the peninsula, it can be overwhelming to even know where to start. If you’re trying to decide between Brewster or Chatham, this is what you need to know. Don’t forget to access our complimentary Vacation Guide to get the inside scoop on planning your getaway to the Cape!

    Choosing Brewster or Chatham

When you are trying to decide where to stay on the Cape, you have to consider what you are looking for. The bayside of the peninsula, where Brewster is, is home to calm, warm water and is full of protected historic areas. Quaint old sea captain’s homes line the streets and scenic Route 6A meanders through the northern part of town. Chatham is located on the oceanside where the land is not protected like it is in Brewster. This gives room for more commercial buildings and not as many historic homes.

    Town Centers Downtown Brewster, MA

There are a great mix of shops, activities, and restaurants in Brewster and Chatham. If having tons of options at your fingertips is important to you, consider the difference of the town centers. Brewster has no town center, but Main Street is lined with restaurants and shops. Walk to places like the Brewster General Store or the Spinnaker Restaurant right from Candleberry Inn. Chatham, on the other hand, has a town center. There are more commercial buildings and shops for you to walk around to.

    Beaches cape cod beach

The beaches on the bayside and oceanside of the Cape both have a lot to offer! On the bayside, the water is calm and warm. During low tide, the water goes so far out that the famous tidal flats appear to be walked on and explored. Many of these Brewster beaches are just moments away from Candleberry Inn! Unlike the bayside, the water on the oceanside reaches a chilly 60 degrees in the summer, but there is more surf. If you like the waves, you probably want to visit a beach in Chatham.
