History of the Brewster Whitecaps
In 1988, the Brewster Whitecaps formed as a member of the Cape Cod Baseball League, but they were conceived back in 1987. Though this was technically the beginning, the baseball fervor in Brewster goes all the way back to 1937. Town teams would play on Sunday afternoons through the 1940s and after World War II, continuing into the 1950s as the Brewster AA team. This original love for the sport no doubt inspired the current-day Brewster Whitecaps. In 1987, the magic began. The Brewster Recreation Commission tried to establish a first-class baseball facility to accommodate existing youth baseball programs. At this time, the suggestion was made for a Cape Cod Baseball League franchise.
A founding group was thus established, and the league was approved. The following year, the team played its inaugural season in the Pleasant Lake area of Harwich, and the name the Brewster Whitecaps was determined. The name and team colors reflect the navy blue, white, and seafoam waves of Cape Cod Bay. In 2006, after several years of community support, Stony Brook Field was constructed and became the official field of the Brewster Whitecaps.
Some important past players from the Brewster Whitecaps include one of the hardest-throwing pitchers in league history. Billy Wagner pitched for Brewster back in 1992 and still holds the league record for strikeouts per nine innings, with 79 in 44.1 innings! That’s an average of 16. Wagner was awarded the title of Outstanding Pro Prospect that infamous summer and has become one of the top closers in the major leagues.Major League Baseball all-star Chase Utley is another player to come from the Brewster Whitecaps back in 1998. That year, he hit .304. Other Brewster Whitecaps players to make the majors include Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees, Blake Tekote of the Chicago White Sox, Mike Aviles of the Cleveland Indians, Gaby Sanchez of the Pittsburgh Pirates, and Bobby Kielty of the Boston Red Sox.
