Brewster General Store History

The Brewster Store’s history began in 1852 when it was originally constructed as a church. In the 1860s, the church was purchased for just one dollar by William K. Knowles. He transformed the building into a general store by removing the church steeple and adding bright, storefront windows. The second floor was dubbed “The Hall” and held local plays, dances, and social events. In the 1900s, the Knowles family added the Brewster Post Office to the building. It was eventually sold to Donald Doane who briefly transformed the store into a museum. The Brewster Store got its name from its next owners, the Dibbles. They began to sell household items no longer available from most modern retailers, which is what the store is known for today. The Boyds now run the Brewster Store, and are incredibly committed to its preservation!
